STAT CPD Day: Instrumentalists and Singers
May 2012
A one day CPD Workshop for teachers and 9th term trainees who would like to develop their knowledge and skills in teaching musicians. Participants will be given plenty of practical ideas and opportunities to try them out, with teachers who have worked in music colleges for over twenty years.
Meeting the Instrument: Dorothea Magonet In this session we will be examining together what happens at the moment when the musician wishes to get hold of this object, the instrument, in order to play. We will be working with this stimulus and explore what goes on physically and in our thinking, and what happens when we employ inhibition and direction in preparation for this meeting between player and the instrument. Working with String Players: Peter Buckoke Peter intends to make connections - through body mapping and hands on a chair - with holding and playing string instruments. He will demonstrate his way of working with some students. There will be discussion of ideas relating to string playing and he will attempt to answer any questions that might come up (if someone else doesn’t come up with a better answer first). Persuading Trained Singers & Wind Players to Breathe Naturally: John Hunter When singers or wind-players are taught certain techniques to control breath, often two erroneous assumptions are made by their teachers; the first is that the learner’s ordinary breathing is OK and the second is that the learner will understand the given technique simply by being told what to do. If the resulting sound is considered satisfactory then there is little regard given to what is actually going on in the learner. Years later habits are deeply ingrained, and before any real change can take place it is necessary for the singer or wind-player to rediscover non-doing, natural, diaphragmatic breathing. In this session we will explore how this can be approached. Presence and Communication: Judith Kleinman In this session we the participants will work on preparation and performance, using singing, poetry and prose. We will work with hands on, inhibition and giving simple and clear directions to address the challenge in ourselves and our students of stage fright; transforming anxiety into confident communication. |
